The 2nd annual Makes Cents event occurred on May 11, 2018 at the University of Pittsburgh School of Business. The event was attended by more than 225 students from 10 local high schools. During the day students heard from a pair of dynamic Keynote speakers, former Pittsburgh Steeler and Founder of the Will Allen Foundation, Mr. Will Allen, and artist and entrepreneur, Njaimeh Njie. Students also participated in several workshops aimed at covering a wide range of financial literacy topics led by our many partners; Hefren Tillotson, Go Realty, Dollar Bank, Grant Thornton, PWC, PNC Bank, Woodforest Bank, and CFA Society Pittsburgh. These interactive workshops allowed students to learn and explore the many areas of personal finance management that they will need to master as they enter postsecondary and adulthood. Students were exposed to budgeting concepts, investing and insurance, saving and banking, and retirement planning. The event concluded with one student winning a $1000 scholarship to be used to pay for college, trade school, or to start a business, presented by our Scholarship sponsor Hefren Tillotson.

We are so thankful to our presenters, sponsors, participants, and volunteers for helping to put on such a successful and energized event. We look forward to our 2019 event and bringing another exciting day of financial education training to our city’s students. Stay tuned for more details coming in early 2019!!
